Caltagirone

Caltagirone - It’s one of those places you might overlook, but honestly, it’s beautiful.  Caltagirone is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site and even if you don't stay, make sure you plan to visit.

Known as the ceramic capital of Sicily, it’s a town where artistry spills onto staircases, balconies, and shopfronts.

It's such a peaceful place, try and get there if you can.

My favourites:

Climb the Scala di Santa Maria del Monte

This iconic staircase is the heart of Caltagirone. Don’t rush—take your time. The climb of 142 steps is lined with charming gift shops and cafés, perfect for pausing (catching your breath!) and soaking in the atmosphere. The view from the top is stunning!

Explore the Ceramics!

Wander through the town and admire the beautiful ceramic creations. From vases to wall decorations, there's something for everyone.

Take a tour and paint your own ceramics - I haven't done this yet but its on the list.

Visit the Museo della Ceramica

Events at Caltagirone

I'm excited to visit in December as they have lifelike nativity scenes, and the staircase is lit up spectacularly.  Natale - I Presepi di Caltagirone

Another special time is 25th July, Saint James' Day where thousands of candles are placed on the staircase to illuminate the way and create an artistic spectacle all of its own.  Super excited to see this.

Getting there:

  • I have a soft spot for Caltagirone, I love going there, and with it being an easy one hour drive from Catania, its very accessible.

  • Buses and trains also go from Catania to Caltagirone.

  • Caltagirone is part of the Catania region.

  • There are two parts to Caltagirone - the Centro Storico and the new side of the city.  Head to the Centro Storico to get to the top of the town.
