Agrigento

The southern coast of Sicily - where history meets the sea.

Agrigento and the Valle dei Templi (Valley of the Temples), the wider Agrigento province has the Scala dei Turchi (The Turkish steps) and not forgetting beautiful beaches.

My favourites:

Explore the Valley of the Temples - UNESCO World Heritage site

Walk among the ancient Greek ruins and consider the history - Temple of Concordia is a standout. We chose an evening tour to escape the intensity of the summer heat, and it proved to be the perfect decision.

Tickets are here:  Valley dei Templi ticket office. Choose a ticket with a guide if you prefer.  Visiting the site is a must do if you are in Agrigento,

Visit the Archaeological Museum

Discover artifacts and learn about the history of Agrigento.  It gives you a deeper understanding of the area's past.

The Cathedral - San Gerlando

Simply stunning.  The ceiling and stained glass are incredible.

Siculiana Marina - a hidden treat

From the Siculiana village, the road leads down to the marina, where you can park, but be prepared for a bit of a walk.  The beach reveals limestone cliffs that shimmer with an almost Swarovski-like sparkle, shaped over centuries by sea and weather. It’s a beautiful sight — take the time to go, because this is something you truly won’t want to miss.

Agrigento

  • The historic centre is high up in Agrigento - the view from the top is much wider than you would have anticipated.
  • If you’ve got a car, head to Scala dei Turchi (The Turkish Steps) which a short drive from Agrigento. The white cliffs and crystal-clear water are incredible.  We look like ants compared to this natural wonder, which is also a UNESCO site.  To minimise the impact from tourists, there is now a ticket system to go onto the steps.  Find more here: Scala dei Turchi ticket office.

Getting there:

  • Agrigento is located on the southern coast of Sicily, about 2 hours from Catania (by car).

  • The new motorway (SS640) opened in June 2025 and it's made such a difference by taking about 30 minutes off the trip.

  • It is possible to catch a bus from Catania but it wouldn't be a day trip,  I would recommend staying for at least one to two nights if you were travelling by bus.
